What is a Traditional Midwife?
Traditional midwives have been around since the beginning of the human race. They have helped women deliver their babies with gentle support and timeless wisdom for centuries. In this country, these incredible women are commonly referred to as Direct Entry Midwives. Around the world, midwives are part of most cultures and in fact, in the countries where the majority of women receive the care of a midwife, birth statistics are the best in all categories. Traditional midwives recognize that birth is normal and in over 90% of all births, no intervention is necessary and actually causes complications.
They provide the highest standard of care possible for women and their babies. This includes the lowest rates of cesarean section, birth injuries to Mom or Baby, episiotomies, perineal tears, and low birth weight babies as well as shorter labors and fewer complications.
They are experts in normal pregnancy, birth and postpartum care.
They recognize that pregnancy and birth is as much a spiritual journey as a physical one.
They deliver at home, the safest and most comfortable place for most women to labor and give birth.
They utilize holistic treatments such as diet, supplements, herbs and homeopathics to prevent and treat many complications.
They form close, intimate bonds with the families they serve. Their prenatal visits are typically an hour or more.
They offer information and help parents make informed choice decisions throughout their prenatal and postpartum period. Many parents are not aware of their right to decline, or the reasons for some of the procedures done routinely by medical practitioners.
They carry with them the wisdom of the ages.
